The United Way of Northwest Alabama, Inc. is a caring, committed, volunteer-driven organization that manages the charitable time and resources of industry, businesses and individuals in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties in a way that maximizes contributions and focuses on impacting issues like helping kids succeed, strengthening families and the community, fighting hunger and homelessness, promoting health and independence. United Way of Northwest Alabama provides funding for 40 programs of more than 21 local agencies. Thousands of people in our community have been helped by a United Way agency.  During 2007 alone, roughly 50,000 people were served right here in Northwest Alabama.

United Way impacts community issues with a limited staff and numerous volunteers are who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and work side-by-side with health and human service agencies, businesses, government, and other service organizations to achieve real results.  Our contributors are people from all walks of life who care about others and who simply want to know that their gifts are being used wisely, efficiently, and effectively to focus on real solutions.  In addition, United Way serves as a neutral table around which diverse groups can partner, collaborate and share knowledge for the community good.

Our Goals to Giving

For an individual, it would be nearly impossible to research the needs of the community, review a non-profit organization's financial data, take a tour of the facility, and interview the executive director and board of directors to find out how your gift is being used every time you wanted to give money to help someone. But for United Way, this is how we do business. At United Way, local volunteers take care to invest your donation well. United Way of Northwest Alabama doesn’t just “give” your money away, we use facts to make decisions about investing donor funds in community programs only after spending a great deal of time researching each program, visiting the organization, meeting with staff members, and carefully reviewing the program’s financial data. As a contributor, you can be assured that the programs funded by United Way of Northwest Alabama are being held to high standards of program and financial accountability, and that these programs are working diligently to improve lives advance the common good of our community.

2. ADVOCATE: You can make change happen with your voice. Get informed. Tell your friends. Write a letter to the editor.
